Florida where it started

Melbourne, Florida, may not be the first place that comes to mind when thinking of U.S. college towns, but for me, it became the starting point of a significant chapter. Coming from England, I embarked on my college journey at Eastern Florida State College in this small coastal city, where I encountered not just a different culture but a new way of life. Melbourne quickly became a second home. From the sun-soaked beaches to the unexpectedly huge food portions, this coastal city offers a unique blend of small-town charm and Florida living.

The Climate Shock

Coming from a cooler climate, the first thing that hit me – quite literally – was the heat. Florida’s subtropical weather is no joke, especially during the humid summers. As someone used to layering up and carrying umbrellas for drizzles, stepping into Melbourne’s blazing sun was overwhelming. It took time, but I eventually acclimated and even came to appreciate the near-constant sunshine, especially when it meant heading to the beach.

The Food Culture Clash

When I first arrived, the food scene in Melbourne was a revelation. American portion sizes were massive compared to what I was used to in England. I still remember my first encounter with the concept of chicken and waffles. It sounded so bizarre – fried chicken on a waffle, drenched in syrup? But to my surprise, it was delicious. It’s one of those odd combinations that somehow just works, and I quickly realized the creativity behind American comfort food.

Other food staples I discovered included:

  • Breakfast platters: Stacks of pancakes, eggs, bacon, and home fries all on one plate.
  • Endless refills: Whether it was "soda" or coffee, free refills became an unexpected perk.
  • Southern BBQ: Juicy ribs, pulled pork, and cornbread were also new additions to my culinary palette.

A Beachside Lifestyle

One of the best things about Melbourne is its proximity to some of Florida’s beautiful beaches. Going to the beach every week became more than just a recreational activity – it was part of life. Whether it was catching a sunrise at Indiatlantic Beach or lounging at Paradise Beach Park, the ocean was never far away. The laid-back beach vibe became a perfect counterbalance to the pressures of college life.

Melbourne might be small, but it’s packed with charm and surprises. My time at Eastern was marked by cultural adaptations, from dealing with the scorching heat to embracing new food traditions. But it was the beachside lifestyle that truly defined my experience. Melbourne is a city where life slows down just a bit, and every weekend has the potential to feel like a mini-vacation. For anyone looking to explore Florida’s Space Coast or just considering a change of pace, this coastal city is worth the visit.
