People of the Mountains
Tucked away in the rugged landscapes of southern Utah are the communities of St. George and Hurricane, where mountains rise against deep blue skies and adventures await around every corner. Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast or simply looking to experience the natural beauty of the American West, this area offers endless opportunities to connect with nature and the spirit of the land.
During my week-long visit, I discovered that the people here aren’t just residents – they’re mountain folk, deeply tied to the land and the lifestyle it demands. Here’s a glimpse into some of the must-do activities that truly capture the essence of this stunning region.
Ascending Mount Zion
No visit to this area would be complete without exploring Zion National Park. We hiked up Mount Zion, where towering red rock formations, cascading waterfalls, and sweeping vistas dominate the scenery. The contrast between the emerald greenery and fiery red rock creates a visual feast that’s hard to match. For those who crave adventure, the challenging trails here offer both thrill and reward.
Highlights:
- Angel’s Landing: Not for the faint of heart, this trail offers panoramic views after a thrilling climb.
- The Narrows: Hike through the riverbed, with towering canyon walls on either side.
Coral Pink Sand Dunes and the Ancient Markings of Kanab
A short drive from St. George took us to the Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park, where the desert comes alive with strikingly coloured dunes. We spent hours navigating the soft sands, feeling like we had stepped onto another planet. The surreal environment is perfect for sandboarding or simply soaking in the expansive beauty.
Our adventure continued in Kanab, where we hiked through canyons to discover a rock face with ancient carvings from indigenous peoples. The petroglyphs offer a window into the history of those who lived here long before us, marking their stories on the very rocks we now explore.

Mountain Thrills
Utah’s wild spirit was on full display as we embraced the rush of kayaking and dirt biking through La Verkin. Whether carving through the water or tearing up dusty trails, these activities bring out the adventurer in anyone. Shooting in La Verkin, surrounded by sweeping views, added another layer of excitement – a true taste of rugged, western life.
Discovering Virgin: A Hidden Gem
In the small town of Virgin, we explored a plateau with breathtaking views that stretched for miles. This was a quieter side of Utah, where time seemed to slow down, allowing us to fully take in the serenity of the surroundings.
We capped off the day with a hearty dinner at a local spot in Virgin, where I had ribs that were fall-off-the-bone tender. The tuna dish looked just as tempting, highlighting the culinary delights hidden within these remote mountain communities.
Southern Utah captured my heart during this trip. The blend of thrilling outdoor activities, deep history, and awe-inspiring landscapes has a unique charm that’s hard to shake off. I could easily see myself returning – maybe even for good. If you’re looking for a place that offers both adventure and serenity, the mountains of Southern Utah might just be your next destination.
